Making: Coasters and Pennants

I’m excited to share with you two additional version of drink coasters and pennants that I have been working on! I always planned on doing the 2 additional coaster designs and color ways in the pennants but it took me a little bit of time to complete everything. I’ll be taking some additional photos for etsy listings but I just wanted to share them before Artwalk this weekend.

The two new designs are hand drawn patterns I created, just like the previous two. The pattern printed on gray is inspired by crystal shapes in nature, I’ve working with a variation of this pattern for a few years now. It was fun to make it into a repeating pattern! The second pattern printed on beige tan felt was inspired by concrete block walls and midcentury design. I take photos of things where ever I go so it was also great to interpret those elements into a repeating pattern.

We’ve been using some of these in our living room the last month and I couldn’t be happier with how they are working out. All of our big cups fit and our coffee table is nicely protected. They work so well! My family has used felt or tiny woven blankets as coasters for years and it’s nice to have created something like that but with my own designs on them.

Ah, and the pennants. I had a plan and you know how plans go…they are in place to grow and evolve and change as a project develops. Sometimes you just have to get started to see how something is going to go in order to see where you’ll end up. I started the pennants by purchasing 1 yard each of 4 different colors. Through the process of learning what type of inks and screens work best for printing on felt I’ve learned some great things and I’m excited to keep making these…but I’m changing it up a bit. I’ll be using a different felt supplier from now on and a few of the color ways I’ve shown so far will not be offered long term.

I will be using a natural light beige and a medium gray color as well as navy but the shades will be slightly different. As well as a few different colors. Sneak hints  – I’m hoping to a make sort of “California’s Gold” version of the California pennant on an old gold colored felt and some other cities and ideas are in the works.

I’m really excited about the new  colors and I hope you’ll be as well. The new felt is the same great quality I prefer in all my materials, really good shades of color but I can order the new felt in much greater quantities and from a supplier that’s been in business for more than 100 years! Pretty awesome.

So if you absolutely love one of these versions I would suggest you pick it up now. For while yes, there will be more pennants, they will be slightly different. If you’re excited about the new versions than stay tuned!
