Going: Anniversary’s and Palm Springs

This January my husband and I celebrated 8 years of being together and 2 years of being married! We decided to pop out to Palm Springs to have a relaxing weekend away. I had never really been to Palm Springs so it was a fun opportunity to explore a new place.
We stayed at the lovely Del Marcos Hotel which happens to be right near downtown- because it’s so close to everything we parked our car on Friday night and didn’t drive again until Monday! Our room came with a cute kitchenette, fully decorated mid century style living area and bedroom area as well as a private patio. We also took full advantage of the breakfast and bicycles that come with the room for use. The hotel is so great in that it’s mellow, quiet and easy to relax- all of the rooms are right off the heated salt water pool and fire pit areas. There are no children allowed at the Del Marcos which makes it even more awesome in my book. We made tasty drinks every day by the pool and enjoyed the company of the other guests as we lounged around.

The first day we borrowed the bikes from the hotel and went on a ride about town. We checked out a bunch of the amazing mid century buildings and went to a fun arts festive where we bought some great art I’ll be sharing with you shortly. We had a great lunch and drinks at Jiao. They have a great Asian fusion menu – kind of Korean and very tasty. Wandering and shopping made for a perfect Saturday.

After riding back to the Del Marcos to drop of some things we rode over to the Ace Hotel. This was my first time at the Ace and while I enjoyed riding over there to check it out I’m very glad we weren’t staying there- as we pulled into the driveway I could hear the DJ from the street 🙂 Perfect for a girls party weekend away but not so much for the relaxing getaway with your husband.  We did however have some great drinks in the bar watching people come and go. It’s a busy place even at the end of January.

One of my favorite things about going out of town in January is that places are often on the chill side. Imagining that Palm Springs likely gets a bit overrun at certain times, it’s nice when things are a bit quieter. My favorite place that evening was the late night dinner we had at Birba– we ended up there based on a recommendation from our waitress at lunch. I had ordered an aperol spritz and she mentioned that their sister restaurant was a fantastic amaro selection. Which they did! We shared some great snacks sitting at the bar and watching folks come and go. I really enjoy just hanging out with my husband in a busy place watching it all go by.
2014-07-miriamdemaSunday was more relaxing by the pool and wandering around town. I really enjoyed our time in Palm Springs- there is just enough to do that you can walk to things and yet not so much that you can’t just sit around all day reading a book. I just don’t take that many opportunities to just sit around reading and relaxing so it was a great time out of town.

Monday as we headed out of town we did do some driving around town checking out more of the mid century architecture, We used the Palm Springs Modern app which shared lots of information about the buildings and the architects. It was a fun way to close out our fun weekend away. Oh and one final meal at Shermans! Man, so tasty- I’m not usually that excited about deli’s but our sammy was delicious and the cannoli we shared was a perfect end.  There are so many tiny awesome hotels in Palm Springs I can’t wait to go back and relax my way through them, with some eating and hiking thrown in for good measure. Yep, that might just be a goal I’m down with.
