Making: Felt Club, this Sunday and New Prints

I went and put together these two new prints just in time for Felt Club this weekend!  Both of these new prints have a bit of a story to them. The first is a map of Los Angeles. I’ve had a print of The Bay Area for a while now based on a vintage AAA map…I’ve been looking for a suitable matching map of Los Angeles to print and I finally found one a few months ago at the Pasadena Flea market!!! The challenge is that the Los Angeles area is so vast, cramming it into a 12 inch square seemed almost impossible but here it is.

The second print is a bit trickier to explain…in September when I was printing the large Palm Tree and Los Angeles Sky prints I printed one whole layer of the blue background first and hated it! The edges were all blurry, the color was super translucent…it just looked awful for something as simple and graphic as the palm trees to be paired with. So I set that stack of paper aside, cut new paper and printed the first layer again in a more opaque lighter turquoise blue and it turned out much better. But then I hate to waste paper and the first try wasn’t a total loss…what to do with it…I swapped around the orientation so the white circles looked like bubbles rising and played around with the composition in photoshop until I got something I found interesting…from there it was just a matter of exposing the screens, printing the new layers, cutting the prints down to a new size and here it is!miriamdema-2008-205

4 layer screen print

The birds are all glittery!!! It makes this print super special, the glitter catches the eye.
It’s a slightly unusual frame size and there is no white border like most of my others so it might be a tad tricky to frame but I think it would look great just tacked to the wall or in a 16″ x 20″ frame with a two inch matte all the way around.Don’t forget to come by and say hello this Sunday at Felt Club!!!
I’ll be there with my booth mate “myfriendroze” and we’ll be selling our wares in addition to making custom one inch buttons on site!

I really like this new print. It’s very edgey and dynamic yet the birds seem totally unaware of what’s going on. Well done!!!
